When you join the club, you will begin in the non-competitor class, regardless of your current fitness level. If your goal is to become a competitive boxer, let the coaches know. As your fitness level and skill base increases, they will work with you to assess when you are ready to join the competitive class. It can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to be ready to join the competitive class and up to 1 year to reach a level of being ready to compete.

What to Expect

Workouts are similar, regardless of which class you participate in. Plan to arrive a few minutes early to wrap your hand wraps and stretch. When the workout begins, you will be lead through a 10-15 minute warm up that includes some light stretching, jogging, sit-ups, push-ups, and other exercises.

After the warm up, you can expect to spend 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours being lead through a series of exercises including shadow boxing, working with the speed bag, heavy bag, double end bag, skipping, and technique building. When you are training to compete, you will also spar during these workouts. Throughout this time, the coaches will interact with each athlete, offering advice and encouragement.

As you work out, you will see a great improvement in cardio, strength, agility, timing, speed and technique. Click here to read suggestions on making the most of your workout.

Suggested Equipment

We recommend that you wear shorts or sweat pants, a t-shirt, and good quality running shoes to your workout. You will also want to purchase hand wraps, which are available at the club, or can be purchased from your favorite sporting goods store. When you begin to spar and compete, you will also need a mouth guard, athletic support and cup (and chest protector if you are female). The club provides bag gloves, sparring gloves, head gear and skipping ropes for all workouts though you may wish to purchase your own.
