Friday, February 23, 2007The Branch 90 Legion was standing room only on Friday night as the Brantford Black Eye Boxing Club hosted an exciting 14-match amateur boxing card. Boxers and their fans came from as far as Toronto, London, and Niagara Falls for this sold out event. Bout 1: 158 lb – Jeremy Abbot (Boxing Loft, Toronto) lost to Kirk Kilm (Primetime, Oakville) in a unanimous decision in this opening match. With this win also being Kirk’s debut fight, he promises to be a boxer to watch for! Bout 2: 125 lb – in the first of 2 female bouts on the night’s card, Kara McLeod (Black Eye Boxing, Brantford) beat Katie Lynch in a split decision. Kara has been unbeatable since her triumphant return from the North American Indigenous Games in Denver, CO, USA. Bout 3: 175 lb – Both Sheldon Evary (Wolves Den, Hagersville) and T.J. Koyouian (Ring London, London) had an excellent debut performance this evening. One of these boys had to win, and Sheldon took home that honor in a hard-fought split decision. Bout 4: 133 lb – Ordinarily light on his feet and hard to beat, Weng Hung (Boxing Loft, Toronto) suffered a loss against Evan Jurmain (Old School, Hamilton) in this unanimous decision. Bout 5: 170 lb – Anthony Joose (Boone’s, Niagara Falls) beat Jacob Steffler (TNT, Guelph) in his debut match. Anthony was the clear victor in this unanimous decision. Bout 6: 165 lb – In yet another debut match, Stephen Baidacoff (McEwan’s, Toronto) beat Dave Dametta (Primetime, Toronto) unanimously. Bout 7: 162 – One of Brantford’s up and coming stars, Sean Cosgrove (Black Eye Boxing, Brantford) had his first taste of victory against Adam Nowosielski. The crowd was on its feet cheering Sean on, and he funneled that energy into a performance that earned him a unanimous decision. Bout 8: 154 lb – Brantford’s fans stayed on their feet to welcome one of our newest contenders, Chris Aucoin (Black Eye Boxing, Brantford) to the ring. In his debut match, Chris showed us that he’s got talent and strength as he won unanimously against Peter Bianca (McEwan’s, Toronto). Bout 9: 130 lb – After nearly 2 hours of action-packed boxing and a brief intermission, boxing fans returned to their seats to watch the second female bout of the night. Rita Lwanga (Boxing Loft, Toronto) beat Julie Cyblinski (Ring London, London). This well balanced match was decided by only 1 point and Rita took home the split decision! Bout 10: 185 lb – Paul Rasmussen (TNT, Guelph) beat Ray Kovinic (Boone’s, Niagara Falls) in this split decision. Bout 11: 190 lb – Reece Girrard (Ring London, London) beat John Slezsak (Black Eye Boxing, Brantford) in Brantford’s only loss of the night. It looked like a promising fight for John early on, but Reece landed a couple of excellent power punches and the fight was stopped by referee stops contest (RSC) at 1:39 in the second round. Bout 12: 160 lb – Boxing fans were in for a treat with this match. Bart Promny (Primetime, Oakville) attacked Jason Barker (McEwan’s, Toronto) with a flurry of punches seldom seen in amateur boxing. His fast-flying hands won him a unanimous decision and the attention of the whole crowd. Bout 13: 132 lb – Tanner Chambers (Boone’s, Niagara Falls) showcased his boxing talents in this fight against Jason Now (Ring London, London). At 1:46 in the third round, Jason’s coach threw in the towel and Tanner won by retirement. Bout 14: 135 lb – The Main Event! A few minutes after midnight, the main event was finally underway.
