Tournament History: Seven years ago, this annual tournament began to honour Gary, John, and Terry Summerhays, 3 brothers who are local boxing legends. The name Summerhays is synonymous with the sport of boxing. The brothers were known as gentlemen in their sport, both in and out of the ring. Gary was the Canadian (1973) and Commonwealth (1978) Light-Heavyweight Champion, John a two-time Canadian Lightweight Champion, and Terry was a champion welterweight. Between the three they boxed against the likes of Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Clyde Gray, and Michael Spinks. The tournament is held each fall to kick off the Ontario Boxing Association’s annual tournament schedule. The Summerhays Tournament is primarily a novice development tournament and categories are available for open fighters as well.
